Canary fans must keep singing

I like to watch a good play or film, usually on television these days it has to be said. But even in the theatre or cinema there is nothing I can do to change the ending, no matter how enthusiastic my applause might be at the end of each act.

Perhaps that is why I would much prefer to be inside a football ground, supporting my team, than being entertained by a good story on stage or screen. Because, even without Delia's impassioned plea to Norwich fans a few seasons back, all fans know that they can influence the result of any match, if they keep up the volume of their singing and cheering, even when the situation looks hopeless.

Canary fans should never forget that it was the famous fight-back from being 4-1 down at home to Middlesbrough, culminating in a dramatic 4-4 draw, which prompted Delia to remind Norwich fans of their leading role when the going gets tough for the players.

I for one will always remember the support for the Norwich players when Borough scored their fourth goal with less than twenty minutes to play. Coventry City have won a cup-tie this week and will be on a high when they come to Carrow Road, so it is vital for the home supporters to get behind their team from the pre-match rendition of 'On the Ball City' and then stay behind their 'City' until the final whistle, no matter how well or badly their players perform.

Unless, of course, they would prefer to watch League One football next season, leading inevitably to a further strain on the club's financial resources...
