Canary Talk - The Numbers Game

Last updated : 09 August 2008 By John Maiden
Did you ever stop to wonder why the Canaries' season ticket sales hit 20,000 shortly after a season in which they avoided relegation by the skin of their beaks; or why more than two thousand Norwich fans snapped up tickets for the opening game of the season at Coventry?

Based on past experience a similar number of travelling fans will follow the Canaries to grounds the length and breadth of England and Wales over the coming months.

As the founder of SAFE - Soccer as Family Entertainment - in 1983, I have to say this phenomenon must have a lot to do with the consistent efforts Norwich City has made over the past three decades to attract young fans and families. Instead of settling for crowds of 13,000 for the visit of less glamorous teams in the old First Division, club staff went out of their way to bring in the fans of the future with initiatives aimed at schools and families, such as "kids for a quid!"

It is, therefore, encouraging to learn that the Football League, which backed SAFE twenty-five years ago, has launched a new campaign intended to make football grounds even more family-friendly than they have undoubtedly become in recent years.

Meanwhile, that other phenomenon, described by sections of the media as Roeder's revolution, has gathered momentum to the point where Glenn has put together a team ready to start the season and a backroom set-up to make sure each player is ready to face the demands of a tough nine months in the Championship.

At the time of writing these few words the number nine shirt has yet to be filled and the Norwich manager has shown himself to be patient when it comes to getting his man; but it would be surprising if the transfer window closed without a recognised goal-scorer to lead the attack in Roeder's revamped line-up.

Having said that, the adaptable Darel Russell made quite an impact when he came on for the second half against Colchester and he might well find himself called upon to fill the same role again before too long. His winning goal against Preston on February 2nd this year will live long in my memory for its quality, more than for the fact that it was scored on my 70th birthday!
