Papers link Canaries to defensive swoop

Norwich's stuttering start to the season has seen them linked with moves for defensive reinforcements and, worryingly, rumours of a Premiership switch for star striker Dean Ashton have resurfaced.

Yesterday's News of the World claimed that City, along with surprise Championship Luton, are chasing the signature of Tottenham youngster Phil Ifill. The move, however, would appear unlikely given that Nigel Worthington signed two players in the same right sided position as Ifill over the summer. The move would reportedly be in a six month loan switch, and Ifill would follow fellow White Hart Lane product Dean Marney to Carrow Road.

The Yellows were also linked by the Sunday Mirror, and again today by the Daily Mirror, to a £300,000 move for Wigan's David Wright. The 25-year-old played 31 times for the Latics as they gained promotion last season. He signed from Crewe Alexandra just over a year ago, where he made over 200 appearances. Wright can also play at right back, but is more likely to be bought as a centre back. NorwichCityMAD's recent poll revealed that 30% of fans think the club should sign a new defender.

A fact on which 100% of fans would agree is that Dean Ashton is an integral part of the push for promtion. His goal on Saturday against Crystal Palace was his second of the season and came after another call up to Peter Taylor's England Under-21 squad for next week's match with Denmark. Paul Jewell's Wigan, however, have been linked with a £5million bid for the former Crewe man, and any suggestion that City are willing to do business will surely bring a stampede of clubs to Carrow Road. Jewell has already taken Damien Francis to the JJB Stadium and will be looking for a striker after Nathan Ellington completes his £3million move to West Bromwich Albion. The Ashton story appeared in yesterday's People newspaper, which also stated that Middlesbrough have joined the race to sign Arsenal's David Bentley.
