As I See It

Thomas also gives a ‘Rooney Rating’ for each player (1:bad signing, 5: excellent signing)

Factor One: Summer Signings.

So far Nigel Worthington has added 4 players to his squad. These players are Scottish International goalkeeper Paul Gallagher, former Coventry midfielder Yousseff Safri, Arsenal youngster David Bentley and defender Simon Charlton.

A reserve keeper was an essential signing following the departure of Paul Crichton. Gallagher will have to be patient, as Robert Green will hopefully for fill his potential in the Premiership. I would feel confident in Gallagher’s ability to replace Green if necessary. Gallagher joined on a free transfer, which was an added bonus. Rooney Rating: 4

Safri provides added competition in Midfield. He is hard working tough in the tackle and can be used in the back four if required. There needed to be more depth to the midfield with only Mulryne, Holt and Francis fighting it out for the two central midfield positions. Rooney Rating 3

Bentley is very talented and highly thought of by Arsene Wenger and Arsenal. It could be one of the bargains of the season if it comes off as Norwich have secured a yearlong loan deal for the future England star. Bentley will want to prove himself to Wenger and his ability to play on the right of midfield as well as up front is an advantage for City. An excellent, excellent signing. Rooney Rating 5

That leaves Simon Charlton who adds needed experience to the midfield. From what I have heard from Bolton fans, they were pretty sad to see him go and is a reliable defender. His experience will be invaluable to Norwich’s cause. Rooney Rating 4

All in all I think Sir Nigel has been sensible in the transfer market so far. I notice that he has strengthened in each position: GK – Gallagher, Defence: Charlton, Midfield: Safri, Attack: Bentley. Sir Nig has not broken the bank with no fee being paid for Safri or Bentley.

As to future signings, Norwich have been linked with a move for James Scowcroft. Other than him it seems to have gone quiet on the Primus deal and any other signings for that matter. I think we could do with one or two more quality players if we are to be ready to take on the Premiership.
