Aston Villa complete club-record signing of Emiliano Buendia from Norwich

Aston Villa have confirmed the signing of Emiliano Buendia from Norwich, with the Villans shelling out a club-record fee to secure his services.

The 24-year-old was strongly linked with a move to Arsenal in January, and though the Gunners revived their interest at the start of the current transfer window, Villa soon emerged as a possible destination for Buendia and it's now been revealed they've won the race to sign the talented midfielder.

Villa took to their official website to announce the news, confirming a club-record fee been agreed and that Buendia had penned a five-year deal.

"Aston Villa is delighted to confirm the signing of Emiliano Buendia for a club record transfer fee," the statement read.

"The 24-year-old, who has signed a five-year deal with the club, joins from Norwich City after completing his medical and finalising personal terms following Argentina’s World Cup qualifying match with Colombia."

Buendia was Norwich's standout player in the Championship last season, notching 15 goals and 17 assists as the Canaries bounced straight back to the Premier League following their 2019/20 relegation.

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith provided a short statement expressing his delight at getting the deal over the line and added that the former Getafe man's versatility could be a great asset for the club moving forward.

“Emiliano has just completed an outstanding season in a Championship-winning Norwich side with 31 combined goals and assists and was named player of the season across the league," he said.

“He is equally capable as a wide attacker or as a number 10 and is a great addition to our attacking options. We are delighted to have made such an exciting signing so early in the summer and look forward to Emi joining up with us for a full pre-season.”
