Blues 'in no rush' to lose defender

Birmingham City boss Alex McLeish has admitted that he may hang on to former Norwich loanee Martin Taylor.

Taylor, formerly of Blackburn, was brought into Carrow Road by Glenn Roeder immediately after his appointment and enjoyed a productive and successful loan spell. The towering centre back was expected to join the Canaries permanently in January but Birmingham and Norwich could not agree a fee. Taylor was then needed in the Blues first team, blotting his copy book with a leg-breaking tackle on Arsenal star Eduardo.

Now McLeish, who said on arrival in the West Midlands to replace Steve Bruce that taylor could leave, appears to have had a change of heart following his side's relegation from the Premier League.

"The situation is different to what it was in the Premier League. I wanted to take swift and decisive action when I came in January," said the former Scotland manager. "Unfortunately things didn't quite materialise that way and we struggled to get the players we wanted.

"I don't like cutting my nose off to spite my face but I thought at the time it was the right thing to do to tell Martin he could leave, but he stayed, made a contribution, is still here and he has got huge experience.

"It's fair to say I am not going to be in a rush to get rid of any defenders at the moment."
