City in Championship winger link

In a slightly convoluted series of reports, Simon Whaley could be the winger that Bryan Gunn is close to securing.

Simon Whaley

After Ian Holloway's first question and answer session, Whaley's name was apparently mentioned as someone the new Blackpool manager had been interested in, but that he had been beaten to the signing by Norwich.

Whaley, 24, was born in Bolton and began his career with Bury, making his name as a winger with an eye for goal. Seven goals in the first half of the 2006 season earned him a £300,000 move to Preston, for whom he has played over 100 games and scored 18 goals.

Last season, Whaley found himself frozen out of the North End first team by manager Alan Irvine, and he was sent on loan to Barnsley.

Norwich boss Gunn recently bemoaned the lack of genuine wingers at the club, with lee Croft having left for Derby and Wes Hoolahan not being a natural wide man.
