City snap up Dutch star

Glenn Roeder has moved to solve Norwich's goalscoring problems by bringing former Dutch under-21 international forward Maceo Rigters in on loan from Blackburn Rovers.

Rigters, who led the scoring charts in last summer's European Under-21 Championships, joined Rovers in the close season after choosing Lancashire over Celtic and, reportedly, Norwich.

Chances at Ewood Park have been limited, however, by the form of Roque Santa Cruz, Benni McCarthy and Matt Derbyshire. Jason Roberts is also in the mix, which has contributed to Rigters, known as Mace, playing just twice in the Premier League.

Roeder was delighted not only to have finally secured the services of a potential goalscorer, but also to have got one of such high quality, cleary through continued contact with Rovers boss Mark Hughes.

"It certainly hasn't been easy and I've been on the look out for the last couple of weeks trying to find a striker to bring here, including Mace," the Norwich boss told Canaries World. "But a few weeks ago Mark wasn't interested in allowing him to come out and play at another club because he's always in and around the first team squad; he trains with them and travels with them to away games, so he was very much part of Mark's plans.

"But over the last few days he's come to realise with the season running out it'll be good for Mace to come out and get some first team action at a decent club, and he's come to very much a decent club, an excellent club. With due respect, our home crowds are bigger than Blackburn's, so it'll have the sort of atmosphere which I'm sure will bring the best out of him."

Rigters himself expressed his pleasure at moving to Norwich but played down any potential regrets over not choosing Carrow Road in the first place.

"I want to play football, but it's also important to make the right choice about which club to go to," said the 24-year-old. "Norwich is a big club with a big background with fans and a big history so I'm happy to be here.

"I never have regrets about choices I make. I was at Blackburn and experienced something, and now I'm here so I can focus on Norwich now, make some goals and help them up the league."

For those who haven't seen Rigters in action, below is an example of how he ruined England's chances last summer.
