Defender in MLS link

Out-of-contract Norwich defender Gary Doherty could have a tantalising offer on the table as Glenn Roeder tries to negotiate a new deal with the former Republic of Ireland international.

Doherty, 28, is being chased by San Jose Earthquakes. The MLS side are also interested in Darren Huckerby, for whom Toronto FC apparently have first refusal. The Mercury News, however, believes that Doherty could be interested in a move to the US.

Former Luton Town and Tottenham Hotspur man Doherty joined Norwich prior to their return to the Premier League. He has been allowed to get to the end of his contract because of uncertainty over which division the Canaries would be in next term. it is also believed that Doherty is among the top earners at the club as one of the only remaining members of the squad from the solitary top-flight season.
