Defender may face long lay-off

The Eastern Daily Press is reporting that Norwich's on-loan Middlesbrough defender Matthew Bates may have suffered a recurrence of a cruciate ligament injury that has hampered his early career.

Bates, who has had two long periods of inaction through knee injuries already, went off after an hour of the draw with Hull City on Tuesday. He was already doubtful for Saturday's clash with Leicester but it is now feared he may not play again this season and for some time beyond.

The club have not confirmed the severity of the injury. They also have Alex Pearce, on loan from Reading, as defensive back-up.
