Defender move falls through on disappointing deadline day

The player, reported to be Fulham centre back Ian Pearce, decided against a move to East Anglia after the two clubs had agreed terms on a loan until the end of the season.

Thirty-one year-old Pearce, who has also played for West Ham United and Blackburn Rovers at the top level, would have brought much needed height, strength and experience to City's defence, which may now have to continue with the same personnel until January.

"It's frustrating to get so close to sorting a deal out only for it to fall through, but we have to respect the player's wishes," was the reaction of manager Nigel Worthington, who spoke to the club's official website last night. "Having said that, the work is still very much on-going to look at other loan options."

Worthington didn't rule out exploring the possibility of bringing in new recruits outside of the new transfer window, saying: "With the closing of the transfer window season-long loans are now prohibited, but short-term deals are still possible and this is the area we will be looking at in the days and weeks ahead."
