Glenn Roeder received a welcome boost today when out-of-contract defender Gary Doherty signed a new two-year deal to stay at Carrow Road.

Doherty, 28, joined the Canaries on their promotion to the Premier League in 2004. Since arriving from Tottenham, the former Republic of Ireland international has played 147 times for the Yellows, scoring four times.

The defender had been mooted as a potential recruit to the MLS and was believed to have spoken to several clubs. Roeder will be delighted to have retained him, however.
