Doncaster calls for salary cap

Neil Doncaster is leading calls for the introduction of a salary cap in the Championship.

Doncaster, who oversaw a massive gamble as the Canaries used 80% of their income on wages in their promotion season, has obviously had a change of heart as he told readers of the Eastern Daily Press of his belief that the second tier of English football could learn from the levels below.

League One and Two have been under turnover-related salary restrictions for two seasons, which seems to have led to an abatement in the number of clubs going into administration. Doncaster thinks the system could benefit the higher echelons of the game.

"League One and Two have made a lot of headway in terms of getting their houses in order," said Doncaster. "For the long-term good of the game it is something we have to look at and consider. You show me the clubs that break even in the Championship - there are not many. It has worked very well in some other sports, it has enabled those sports to have better competition within their leagues."
