Fall back named in striker chase

With the main striking position still vacant at Carrow Road as the opening friendlies of the season loom, Bryan Gunn could turn to Colchester's Clive Platt should he fail to secure his first choice targets.

Crystal Palace's Alan Lee would be the obvious priority, but his wages and the requirement for a substantial transfer fee are proving a stumbling block in the negotiations for a player who made no secret of his desire to move to Norwich.

Another alternative is Liam Dickinson, signed by Derby from Stockport in a £750,000 deal last summer and the subject of two 'small' bids from the Canaries this summer. The trail appears to have gone cold, with Brighton also said to be interested.

Platt, at 31 the oldest option, has a proven record in a lower division career at places like Walsall, Rochdale, Peterbrough, MK Dons and, most recently, Colchester. Never what you'd call a prolific scorer, Platt has nonethless been good for a goal every four games at his two most recent clubs. He was Colchester's record signing when Geraint Williams paid £300,000 for his services.
