Marshall 'among the best outside the Prem'

In a week when he could go a long way to dislodging Britain's most expensive custodian between the sticks for Scotland, Norwich goalkeeper David Marshall has been named by Guardian Unlimited as one of the best players outside the Premier League.

Marshall, who moved to Carrow Road from Celtic last summer, has continued to impress throughout a very up and down season for the Canaries which sees a side who were at one stage five points adrift at the bottom of the league now encroaching on the top half. City's recent unbeaten run and increased solidity means they now boast a meaner defensive record than the Championship's top four.

Marshall is included by Oliver Irish in his list of the ten best players outside the top flight only as an addition (he didn't have to select a goalkeeper so plumped for outfield players), but is mentioned as his choice of goalkeeper alongside Leeds United's Casper Ankergren.

No other Canaries made the list, however players with more than two seasons in the top flight or on loan from the elite, either of which account for a lot of the Norwich side, are ruled out of the list.

Marshall is currently on a training camp with new Scotland boss George Burley and the former Ipswich boss will be well aware of the Championship contingent in his squad. Craig Gordon cost Sunderland £9million last summer but has had periods when Roy Keane has preferred former Canary Darren Ward. With Marshall's form this season, Keane may not be the only one.
