Naughton ready to fight for Norwich City first-team place

"I wouldn't come in and expect to be in the team, everyone's starting from scratch," he told BBC Radio Norfolk.

"Whoever's performing gets the shirt so I think everyone's fighting against each other."

Norwich vice-captain Russell Martin was ever-present at right-back, Naughton's preferred position, in their promotion-winning Championship campaign last season.

Having faced Paul Lambert's Canaries while at Leicester, Naughton says his opinion of the squad has been confirmed following his first few days in training.

"I've been very impressed, I've seen a lot of them playing against them last year so I already knew what they were about," he said.

"I sort of knew what I was coming to so when I started training. They were as good as I thought they were going to be."

Despite winning nine caps for England's Under-21 side, Naughton has made just one substitute appearance for Spurs in the top flight.

Speaking after Norwich's 3-0 friendly win at Coventry, he said the players share the excitement of fans at Carrow Road ahead of their top-flight return, albeit privately.

"There's a lot of excitement, but sometimes you have to settle down, if you get carried away it could come and smack you in the face," he said.

"Everyone's just getting ready for it, and that's what these games are for, but secretly I think everyone's buzzing for it."
