Norwich v Watford

Last updated : 05 August 2010 By BBC Sport

Promoted Norwich may be without Grant Holt for the opening match of the new Football League season on Friday. The striker is due to stand trial in Shropshire on Friday charged with a motoring offence, and may not make it back to Carrow Road for the kick-off.

Full-back Steven Smith (ankle) is doubtful for the Championship opener.

Watford's new signings Rene Gilmartin and Tom Aldred are both available but defender Dale Bennett has been carrying a knock and may miss out.

MATCH PREVIEW

A year after the humiliation of being mauled 7-1 at home by Colchester in their first League One match, Norwich return to the Championship looking to maintain their brilliant progress under boss Paul Lambert.

The likes of Grant Holt, Chris Martin and Wes Hoolahan were too good for the third tier last season and will be relishing the chance to see if they can replicate that form at a higher level.

They face an inexperienced Watford side that has been widely tipped to struggle this season, so will want to get off to a good start, especially away from home.

Last term's relegation struggle was partly down to the Hornets' poor away results - something manager Malky Mackay will definitely be looking to address this time around.
