Papers predict transfer gloom for Canaries

With the transfer window shutting next week and a number of protracted moves reaching their inevitable conclusions, the British press have gone into rumour overdrive.

Of course, few of the rumours about Norwich have any substantial base within the club itself. Nigel Worthington has commented on the status of Morrison's proposed move from Birmingham City to Carrow Road, saying: "We have made him our best offer so the ball is in his and his advisor's court."

Apparently not, however, as Steve Bruce yesterday revealed that Crystal Palace had matched the bid before blabbing Harry Redknapp stuck his oar in. The Saints manager, whose side benefitted from a series of dubious decisions to beat City at the weekend, claimed that his own club had reached an agreement with the Blues over Morrison, who has already rejected a move to East Anglia. With Palace, where Morrison began his career, in the running, the signs are discouraging for Southampton as well as the Yellows, but time will tell.

Going the other way in what is becoming a revolving door at Colney, if you believe the Sun newspaper, is Dean Ashton. The scattergun approach of the tabloids to unsettling the striker has seen a succession of clubs linked with big money bids, only to rule themselves out of the running. That is if there is any running, Worthington, Ashton and Chief Executive Neil Doncaster all having ruled out a switch.

The latest club we are all hoping to hear a denial from is Manchester City. Stuart Pearce, fresh from signing Andy 'Andrew' Cole and Darius Vassell, is apparently modelling himself on Steve McClaren and signing as many strikers as possible, allegedly tabling a £7million bid for former Crewe favourite Ashton. Meanwhile West Ham are reportedly after a swap deal involving Marlon Harewood. Leeds United's David Healy, a former Norwich target, is also being linked to Upton Park.

With Milan Baros now expected to join Aston Villa, at least they can be discounted as being linked to Ashton (or indeed Morrison). Of course, it now means that Liverpool will supposedly be looking for a new forward and, having signed Peter Crouch, we all know a striker considerably better. Roll on the end of silly season.
