Roeder takes defenders on trial

Norwich's threadbare squad could receive a double boost depending on the performance of two trialists during pre-season training.

Former Blackburn defender Bruno Berner and French right-back Patrick Barul have joined up with the rest of the Canaries and the pair will hope to impress Glenn Roeder enough to secure deals. Roeder himself will be encouraged by the fact that both experienced foreigners are available for free.

Berner, 30, was released by Blackburn at the end of last season. he is a Swiss international with 16 caps and can play at left back, left midfield or in central defence.

Barul, 30, has played for Canes, Nice and Lens. Along with Berner he could plug the gaps left by the departures of loanees Alex Pearce, Ryan Bertrand and Mo Camara, as well as the release of Juan velasco and Andrew Cave-Brown. Cave-Brown yesterday joined fellow Canary youth product Rossi Jarvis at Leyton Orient.
