Russell had been hoping to return to action in around six weeks after picking up the injury during The Canaries 2-0 win at Reading earlier this month but he has undergone an operation to insert a small screw into the bone meaning he is more likely to be out for around three months.
"Darel's a little bit down at the moment and he's entitled to be," said City boss Nigel Worthington.
"He came in against Ipswich and Reading and did a good job for us and all of a sudden he's picked up an injury without any contact.
"We are all disappointed for him, but we'll do our best to keep his spirits up and ensure he's still very much involved."
