New Walsall manager Dean Smith has made his first foray into the transfer market, signing Norwich City midfielder Matthew Gill on a month's loan. The 30-year-old could go straight into the squad for Saturday's game at one of his former clubs Exeter City.

Gill has made six appearances for the Canaries this season, the last against QPR on New Year's Day.

"He's someone who's got energy, can keep the ball moving and will cover a lot of ground," said Smith.

"He's an experienced lad who has played in something like 370 league games, so his understanding and know-how is going to be important for us in the matches that lie ahead," the Saddlers boss told the club's official website.

Gill's arrival solves Smith's shortage of central midfielders, having had only Matt Richards and Paul Marshall fit to start in recent weeks.
