We're doing our best for you - Delia and Michael

The movement to oust Nigel Worthington from his position as manager of Norwich City looks to have met a brick wall once more in the form of majority shareholders Delia Smith and Michael Wynn-Jones.

The couple, whose investment was a major factor in the club's re-emergence first as a force at Championship level and then, briefly, in the Premiership, have seen fit to defend the actions of those in charge at Carrow Road in the face of some of the most vociferous dissent of the last decade.

Protests in and outside the ground have formed the backdrop to recent home victories as the side lies well short of a play-off position in the run-in of a Championship table they were expected to head. Worthington has been the man to bear the brunt of supporters' anger.

Alas, Smith and Wynn-Jones have re-iterated their support for Worthington, pointing to his record during his whole time at Norwich as proof that he can turn the situation around. They quote statistics on how many relegated teams have returned immediately to the Premiership, and cite the patience of clubs like West Ham in retaining an unpopular man at the helm as having been vindicated in the long run.

The most concerning fact for the pair seems to be the actions of certain supporters in booing a winning team. Their hope in making clear their support for the current regime will be designed to put an end to the protests and, as they emphasise at the end of the statement, unite the club's powerful support in a postive direction - behind the team.
