Worthy plays cards close to his chest after 'outrageous' stories

Nigel Worthington used his column in the Evening News this week to slam the speculation culture fostered by the introduction of the transfer window.

The Norwich chief was angered at reports coming out of Carrow Road this time last week that Dean Ashton had signed for Portsmouth, and that he should continually have to justify himself and his selections during the month of madness.

"You had the situation at Carrow Road last Saturday where a Sky Sports presenter was putting out on air the “fact” that Dean Ashton has signed for Portsmouth for X amount of millions - and all that's based on is speculation and rumour," wrote the Ulsterman.

"As far as I'm concerned, that's absolutely outrageous and that individual ought to be brought to book. It's not professional. And it's certainly not helpful at all as far as we're concerned.

"Likewise, I'm not suddenly going to start alerting an opposition manager as to who is and isn't fit just because we're in the middle of the transfer window."

The latter statement would go some way to explaining why it is still not known whether Ashton or Robert Green are likely to feature against Plymouth this afternoon.

Ashton may still be feeling the effects of the groin injury that ruled him out of the FA Cup defeat to West Ham, while Green was being monitored all week after sustaining a head injury in the match.

Paul McVeigh, who has enjoyed a renaissance in recent weeks, is suspended, although Darren Huckerby returns from a ban, while Jurgen Colin is back in contention and should replace Rossi Jarvis. Carl Robinson and Andy Hughes remain injured, although Hughes is close to a comeback, and Youssef Safri will play against Zimbabwe for Morocco later today.

Victory this afternoon would be City's fourth successive away victory and would complete a double over the Pilgrims.
