Croft's Original Performance

Mark Burchett & John Maiden report from Carrow Road.

The Canaries staged a second half comeback to preserve Paul Lambert's record of never over-seeing back to back defeats since becoming manager.

The turnaround was enough to share the spoils, although at half-time with Burnley leading two-nil through a Martin Paterson brace it had looked as though all three points were heading back to Turf Moor for the first time this season.

The City boss, who had kept faith with the side that started in the 3-1 defeat at Cardiff last weekend, set the comeback in motion at the start of the second half, introducing Anthony McNamee in place of Simon Lappin. This was swiftly followed by the appearances of David Fox and Chris Martin to complete the reinvigoration of the Canaries.

City's Man of the Match Andrew Crofts set up Chris Martin for the first goal, before in second half stoppage time scoring the equaliser and being sent off!

Burnley kicked off attacking the Barclay end goal and, after a Simon Lappin corner had caused problems for the visitors, they hit back, forcing the City rearguard to concede three flag kicks in quick succession.

The Canaries came close to opening the scoring after twenty minutes when Russell Martin's right wing cross was met at the far post by Lappin. Unfortunately, for the Scot, who has yet to score this season, his downward header was blocked on the line by Lee Grant and hacked into touch by an alert defender.

Five minutes later Norwich fell behind. The referee, Trevor Kettle, had Paul Lambert steaming when he failed to blow up for a blatant foul on Simeon Jackson. This allowed the Clarets to break out of their own half at lightning speed and, when Tyrone Mears got in behind the Norwich defence, his cut-back from the right of the City penalty area was side-footed into the far corner of the goal from ten yards by Martin Paterson.

It got worse for the Canaries a few minutes later when former City loanee, Dean Marney released the lively Paterson with a through ball, which left him with only the keeper to beat. John Ruddy got a hand to the shot, but was unable to prevent the ball from trickling over the goal line.

HALF-TIME: City 0 Clarets 2

Not for the first time since his arrival at Carrow Road, the City boss sent on McNamee in place of Lappin at the start of the second half and it soon became apparent that his pace and nifty footwork would cause real problems for Danny Fox, the Burnley left back.

However, it was another substitute, Chris Martin, who scored City's 71st minute goal with a neat turn and shot when Crofts put in a low cross from the right.

McNamee came close to scoring the equaliser when his shot cannoned across the goalmouth after hitting the foot of Grant's left-hand upright. But the Canaries did score a well deserved equaliser two minutes into stoppage time when Crofts beat Grant's dive to his right with a fierce drive from some sixteen yards.

Unfortunately for Crofts, who had been unlucky to get his fifth booking of the season for an apparently fair tackle in the eighty-fourth minute, Mr Kettle produced another yellow card, closely followed by a red, for a foul just seconds before the full-time whistle.

The resulting ban will give the City boss the wrong kind of team selection problem for the next match against Millwall. But if the same fighting spirit, shown by the whole team against the Clarets, is carried forward to the New Den, the Lions might easily be tamed on Tuesday night.
