Watford had an off day and finished the game with just nine men.

Dominic Foley was booked after 11 minutes and Paul Robinson followed him into referee Paul Danson's notebook after 22 minutes.

After 29 minutes, Paul McVeigh's speculative right-foot lob from the edge of the area took a deflection off Sean Dyche to give Norwich a first-half lead.

Mark Rivers went off with a leg injury just before half time and his place was taken on the right wing by Alex Notman.

Four minutes into the second half it was his cross from the right which brought a second goal for City when Iwan Roberts squeezed between two defenders and forced the ball past Alec Chamberlain from close range to record his first goal of the season.

David Nielsen replaced McVeigh in the Norwich attack two minutes later and in the 65th minute he was pulled back by Robinson who then pushed him as he got to his feet.

Robinson was shown a straight red card for this indiscretion and Phil Mulryne took advantage with the resulting free-kick.

He curled a 20-yard right-foot strike inside Chamberlain's left-hand post.

Watford were reduced to nine men nine minutes from time when Foley was shown a second yellow card and three minutes from full-time Nielsen scored the fourth goal.

He collected Mulryne's pass 18 yards out and Chamberlain could not prevent the ball finding the net in spite of his best efforts
