Norwich made two changes to their line-up for this match with McVeigh switching to the right flank making room for Chris Llewellyn on the left wing and Daryl Sutch chosen over Nedergaard for the right-back position.

Mullers scored City's only goal and was Man Of The MatchCity were slow out of the blocks with Carlton Palmer's men eager to perform for their new Player-Manager who slotted effortlessly into their back four.

Nigel Worthington's men knew a good performance and three valuable points would see them take over from Wolves at the top of Division One.

Even though City retained possession early doors they had problems creating any real chances apart from a Iwan Roberts snap shot which tested Lee Jones in the Stockport goal.

Aaron Wilbraham and Ali Gibb both came close for County and they eventually took the lead with a goal on 28 minutes. Gibb broke down the right and crossed perfectly for Glynn Hurst to head home.

Back came Norwich through, a Roberts effort from 15 yards out testing Jones, who just managed to turn the shot onto the post before County cleared.

Chances were limited up to half-time with the hard working Stockport midfield closing down the space and City misplacing a number of passes.

HALF-TIME: STOCKPORT 1 NORWICH CITY 0

After the break Scott Taylor couldn't have come closer to doubling his side's advantage when his blistering volley bounced back off the angle of post and cross bar.

Norwich were desperately looking for a way back into the game when Nigel Worthington introduced 3 substitutes in Mark Rivers, Steen Nedergaard and Alex Notman.

Rivers immediately got into the action when his chipped effort over the advancing keeper was cleared off the line by defender Keith Briggs

Two rash challenges on McVeigh got Gibb sent off on 69 minutes

Stockport then got a second goal when Clark hit a long free kick for Palmer to steal in at the far post to smash a volley past Robert Green in goal.

Eight minutes later, though, Norwich were handed a lifeline when Gibb was sent off, recieving 2 yellow cards in the space of three minutes for two rash challenges on Paul McVeigh.

The Canaries then laid siege on the County goal but came up against lee Jones in outstanding form.

The 'keeper who had already made a brilliant save to deny Iwan Roberts in the first half and Chris Llewellyn and then Paul McVeigh after the break, was equal to everything Nigel Worthington's men threw out him.

Five minutes from time, though, Mulryne set up a barnstorming finish when the magnificent Jones was beaten with a pile driver from the edge of the box.

Mulryne then had another opportunity but pulled his shot wide. Roberts just failed to connect with a Malky Mackay cross shot and Notman should have done better with a free header.

City piled on the pressure and created a number of chances but they just could not get that vital second. They also had claims for a penalty turned down but it was just meant to be Carlton Palmer's night.

Post Match Comments:

Nigel Worthington - "Stockport are hard working and committed to the cause just like Carlton when he played. I was disappointed with the two goals that we conceded, they were both sloppy. We created plenty of chances but we need to take them. If we keep on playing like that we won't go far wrong this season. We came up against another inspired keeper who performed heroically. It is frustrating as we need to hit the back of the net rather than their keeper."
"The players are obviously dissappointed with the result and are down but we'll take it one day at a time. There is still a long way to go and I'll be happy if we hang onto the coat tails of the league leaders and be in with a shout come the latter stages of the season".
"I was pleased with the level of our performance and how the players reacted following the Bradford defeat."
"Mulryne took his goal well and gives 100% everytime he take the field. He's getting stronger and his fitness is starting to show in the latter stages of games".
"We need to steady the ship and start games well rather than performing when we are a goal down and chasing games in the last 20 or 30 minutes.

Phil Mulryne - “The team are playing very well but we must learn to kill off the opposition and not waste these chances when we do create them.""I was pleased to be in the position to strike the shot and watch it fly in. That's three goals now, which compared to last season is a good return. The team however need to be more deadly in front of goal. We are creating so many chances but we're not taking them”.
