What A Fantastic Day Out

Last updated : 22 December 2003 By Thomas Rooney

What a day! If we had have won 2-0 at Portman Road it would have been amazing in itself but to go top of the league as well was something very very special.

Here are my views on the game itself, the fans, the ground, the journey and Delia's Dancing!.

The game: We deserved to win. Simple as that. Ipswich started off the brighter but Norwich soon began to show their true colours after a fairly nervous start. Leon McKenzie had barely been mentioned before the game, as Huckerby was still the name on everyone’s lips. That has soon changed as McKenzie has booked his place in Norwich City history by scoring two goals on his Canary debut to send the Canary's to top of the table. His two goals were excellent. For the first goal he was in the right place at the right time and finished well with his left foot. The second was a brilliant looping header after an excellent run and cross from Gay Holt (yes GARY HOLT) on the right hand side. Once the second goal went in I was confident we were going to win and singing 'Top of the league at Portman Road' was a dream come true.

As for man of the match I would say that ever single player made you proud to be a Norwich Fan. There were fantastic performances from the entire back five and a back in form Paul McVeigh was also outstanding. However for a lively performance and two debut goals my Man of the Match has to be Leon McKenzie.

McKenzie Wooo oooo,
McKenzie Wooo ooooooo,
We signed him from Barry Fry,
He made the scummers cry,
McKenzie Wooo oooo.........

The Ipswich fans: I was very very disappointed with the Ipswich fans. They were quiet throughout the game and were put to shame by the Norwich fans. I find in unbelievable how little noise they made, I mean it's a local derby, one of the most important games of the season and a couple of renditions of 'Barmy Army' is all they could manage? Useless.

The Norwich fans: Fantastic. We never stop singing, and were as loud and passionate as ever. The several chants of 'We are top of the league' and 'Top of the league at Portman Road' were especially thrilling. I would publicly like to thank Ipswich for letting us stay in for the 20 minutes after the game as it was a fantastic 20 minutes, singing and Dancing as the Ipswich fans made their way out of Portman road. As we were escorted away by the Police after the game we were still in full voice, with chants such as ' We've fu***d you Christmas up' it was a great occasion. OTBC.

The ground: Portman road is fairly impressive. The pitch was in superb condition and a capacity of over 30,000 is also a good achievement. A pity they couldn't out sing the 2,000 Norwich fans.

The Journey: I travelled by car and it was a very pleasant journey. We were parked up by 10.15 with only a 5 minute walk to the ground. The journey back was particularly special. We had flags out the window and basically sang all the way home. It was also pleasing to see the faces of the Ipswich fans as we drove passed them!

Delia's Dancing: As we were held in the ground after the game Delia came over and whether she had had one too many Cherry's or she was just so happy with the result and performance, she was certainly in a very good mood and her dancing and singing to 'We are top of the league' proved this. Go on Delia!!!!!!!!!!

Ipswich 0-2 Norwich

WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE.

Need I say anymore!

On the ball city...........

Keep The Faith.
